I believe I reproduce your problems.

I've just tried your archive on Windows.
With ARAnyM and AFROS freshly downloaded.

Your 1-16 works fine, the desktop behaviour is good and the gradients 
are here.

On 1.17, I have no gradients and bad refresh.
I noticed an interesting thing:
- Start ARAnyM up to TeraDesk
- Move the mouse over the menu bar: no problem
- Click somewhere in the green background and move again the mouse over 
the menu bar: no problems
- Click once on an icon (for example, Bookmarks) then move the mouse 
over the menu bar: the desktop background (including icons) is not 
updated anymore. However, if you remember the position of the icons, you 
can double-click one of them and a file window opens, as usual. The 
behaviour of the window is correct, but the desktop background is still 
not updated.

Now the problem is reproduced, this is the first step towards the fix.
