I'm surprised there are some extra-bytes at the end of the executable. 
Do you still use the old binutils 2.13 ? (check with ld --version)
If it is the case, please update to a more recent one, like the latest 
RPM recently uploaded by Keith:
http://www.atariforge.net/sparemint/html/packages/binutils.html

However, I don't think your problem comes from the old binutils.
