I find it a bit odd that freemint can load it's modules from
a specific folder but the programme in AUTO has to be manually
changed.

Would it be better if there was a just a mint loader in the AUTO
folder that loaded the kernel and modules from the selected
version folder ?

The default would be the last one chosen but the user could open
the ini menu and select a specific version. This would load the
kernel and the matching xaaes and modules.
